The Dr. Werner Schmid Foundation was founded in 1976 thanks to an initial large donation, topped up with a second legacy in 1995. The intended purpose: to use the income from foundation capital to maintain and extend the botanical garden on Schynige Platte as well as to support endeavours for the protection of Alpine flora. Without this foundation, the Alpine Garden would today face great financial problems.
